Ex-LMS Train Number 44984 - Black 5.

The original train was supposed to have been Number 44825 Stanier 5 4-6-0; it had been specially cleaned at Colwick Shed, but injector problems lead to the cancellation and replacement of the dirty but serviceable 44984 which kept to schedule for the last run on what was the Great Central line before its closure. Later that evening it also worked the last Marylebone to Manchester run.
Although not visible in this image, a wreath to honour the occasion was hung on the front of the locomotive’s smokebox.
