Woodford Halse
File Book 010 : SM 26 A
The first, of the the last class of steam locomotive built for British Railways, the 92000, was based in south Wales.
Behind the 92000 is a war time austerity locomotive, of which over 20 were based in Woodford from early post war years till early 1960s.
The actual last British Railways steam locomotive built, was built in March 1960 at Swindon and named Evening Star and numbered 92220. It was the 999th locomotive in the BR Standard range.
However the last British Railways Steam Locomotive numerically speaking was the 92250, ironically built at Crew before evening star was built at Swindon - there were 251 built
The Evening Star, however, was not the last steam locomotive built in the UK, the LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado was constructed between 1994 and 2008.
